The Famous Church of Bones :: Sedlec Ossuary
Topic: Art, Bizarre, Images, Macabre|There is a church in the Czech Republic where the alters, chandaliers, bells and art are all made of Human bones. The Church is called the Sedlec Ossuary and the story behind it is a bit bizarre.
40,000 dead, the skulls and skeletons, centuries of war and plague victims, all form the morbid artwork that fills the church - Sedlec’s Church - All Saints ossuary in the Czech Republic. In 1511, the ossuary was created - a half-blind monk gathered the human bones of the black death victims, which were added to with victims from 15th century Hussite Wars. Frantisek Rint, wood carver and artist was employed by the Schwarzenberg family to imaginatively compose the bones into works of art; amongst his creations came the Schwarzenberg family’s coat of arms, and a chandelier containing every bone in the human body, composed of several bodies. In the four corners of the ossuary sit four ‘bells’, pile upon pile of bones carefully stacked with a hollowed center.
From artagraphica, the explanation to this macabre holy ground.
In 1278 the Cistercian abbot of Sedlec, Henry, traveled to Palestine and the ‘Holy Land’, bringing home a sample of earth from Golgotha which was later, upon his return, sprinkled over the grounds of his local cemetery. The grounds were immediately considered scared, and hence became a much sought after location for relatives to bury their dead. In the 14th century, the Black Death spread the bubonic plague across Europe and now 30,000 bodies all wanted a resting place within the sacred grounds. Such vast numbers of dead led to the creation of the ossuary in 1511 by a half-blind monk who gathered up the bones to be stacked up within the ossuary, making space for new corpses, which were soon taken up by more victims from 15th century Hussite Wars. The ossuary itself is situated in the basement of the All Saint’s Chapel.
Sedlec is a suburb to Kutna Hora, a town in south Bohemia that once flourished due to its mined silver reserve. It is about an hour’s travel from Prague.
History of the Church from the church’s website:
A cistercian monastery was founded near here in the year 1142. One of the principal tasks of the monks was the cultivation of the grounds and lands around the monastery. In 1278 King Otakar II of Bohemia sent Henry, the abbot of Sedlec , on a diplomatic mission to the Holy Land. When leaving Jerusalem Henry took with him a handful of earth from Golgotha which he sprinkled over the cemetery of Sedlec monastery, consequently the cemetery became famous, not only in Bohemia but also throughout Central Europe and many wealthy people desired to be buried here. The burial ground was enlarged during the epidemics of plague in the 14 th century (e.g.in 1318 about 30 000 people were buried here) and also during the Hussite wars in first quarter of the 15 th. century.
After 1400 one of the abbots had a church of All -Saints erected in Gothic style in the middle of the cemetery and under it a chapel destined for the deposition of bones from abolished graves, a task which was begun by a half blind Cistercian monk after the year 1511. The charnel-house was remodelled in Czech Baroque style between 1703 - I710 by the famous Czech architect, of the Italian origin ,Jan Blažej SANTIM-Aichl. The present arrangement of the bones dates from 1870 and is the work of a Czech wood-carver, František RINT (you can see his name, put together from bones, on the right-hand wall over the last bench).
Our ossuary contains the remains of about 40 000 people. The largest collections of bones are arranged in the form of bells in the four corners of the chapel. When in Europe, you may visit the Sedlac Ossuary

Dear Sir and Reader, these Bones are not as what you did say in the story. These Skeletons Belong to Muslim Peoples Killed along Europe in the Fallen ages of Muslim Turkish Imperialistic. This represent THE PURE TERRORIST of the New civilized world as you say about yourself.
Please revise all of your encyclopedias old and new about “The Plague”, ALL VICTIMS WAS BURNED TO ASHES. These skeletons indeed does not belong to plagued peoples!!!

Shame on every one who believes, thinks or considers this church as a monument of graphic art even if these skeletons belong to any ethnic group.
I’m really and deeply sad cause I’m pretty sure that these skeletons come from Muslim people knowing the European kings madness in the history.

This church built by bloody idiots should be demolished and bones should be buried. That’s how we should respect the dead people whether they are Muslims, which may be the truth, or not.
December 8th, 2009 at 2:43 pm
this is sweet but kinda scary… i wonder how they seriously like put all that together?… that is freaking amazingness! but sad…

This is the third time I hear about this church,
it is built using Muslim bones and however if it is built with any human kind people bones then the church is not following any religion.
All religions ask for respecting other human kind

Dear all, I am a manager of Information Center in Kutna Hora Sedlec and with the full authority given to me by the owner of the Bone church I have to confirm, that the bones have nothing to do with muslims. The bones come from 3500 sqm large cemetery, they were exhumed before the abolition of the cemetery and placed with piety inside the chapel. There is enough independent scientific evidence about that. Only the fact non Christians could never be buried on Christian cemetery neither inside any church in those times gives enough support. Trust this helps.

@ IC Sedlec
If you really are an authority on Kutna Hora Sedlec, can you explain, how come these bones are in such a good shape and they are all complete, I guess you don’t haven’t studied biology, what happens with bones in graves. They start wearing away and decomposing within days. Only complete ignorant people will believe your fabricated story. I am 110% sure these bones come from the murdered Muslims. You can go through History of Crusades as well, to study the atrocities of Christian Kings/Knights and then study what SALADIN gave them in return, MERCY….This is ISLAM, this is the religion of peace.

It is strange to know that this type of Chapel exists. Even if it contains bones of people who were buried near or at this site, it is still gruesome…!!! Were the dead asked before death that they will be put on show…after death???? and if it is a huge heap of muslim corpses bones then it is surely even more gruesome becuase in that way it becomes worse then any other heinous act in history of mankind…!!!!!!

Would it be OK to pray in a church made of bones?
I think Christianity would consider it Satanic and would not accept it, what do you say? Somebody please answer without getting angry.

Yeah Muslims aren’t so peaceful, you killed your own children during the times of the crusade and you mindlessly give your own children automatic machine guns to kill in the name of allah … An oxymoron if i ever knew one, Muslims are supposedly self proclaimed lovers and followers of peace. Load of bullshit get of your high horse you’re barbarians just like evryone else… besides the Buddhists.. Assholes

July 21st, 2010 at 5:30 am
Not a true religon can do this. I don’t care if it is muslims’ bones or came from a cematory. What has been done is irreversable but if it is made of muslims it is a satanic act and we all shoud condemn this.
August 3rd, 2010 at 6:17 pm
I’m also searching for this thing that is true or not? but very nearly kashif is saying truth.. it has a clue that if all bones are taken from cemetery so it has to decompsite but they are not. thay all in good condition.so may be it is true Mr.IC sedlec manager

Am I the only one who thinks this is beautiful? The bones have been so carefully preserved and carefully placed. It’s truly an amazing work out of art and I think it is very respectful to the deceased. Thanks for the article and photos.
August 9th, 2010 at 8:34 pm
No, you are not. I find the Ossuary absolutely beautiful as well.
NOTE: THERE are a few pics listed under the Hallstadt images as being from the hallstadt artwork and they are not; they are actually from the Kostnice Ossuary Bienhaus.
BUT still , I find these places peaceful and soothing. Please don’t call me/us any disrespectful names because of this; I can’t explain it, and don’t have to.
September 4th, 2010 at 3:15 pm
Whether the bones belong to Muslims or others, the ones who build a church using human being bones are true animals. the story was a freaking lie too. God know what’s the story behind this crule scene!!!
September 8th, 2010 at 11:21 am
@Domino and @wishingwell,
I fully agree with the pair of you. These photos are absolutely amazing. If somebody were ‘desecrating a holy burial site’, then why would they take as much care as has so obviously been taken, to preserve and place these relics. Life was so much different then to what it is now, so get a grip. It is a thing of beauty. Imagine if the people alive then saw how much we’ve managed to f*ck up our world today. Just because they had different customs then, who gives a sh*t about whose bones they may or may not be; the fact remains that they have not been mistreated in any way.

September 23rd, 2010 at 4:23 pm
They aren’t Muslim bones, they are Christian bones. It really wouldn’t matter whose bones they are because the people are long dead an have no say in what happens to their bones after death. Just because you believe something to be true does not make it fact. Personally, I find it somewhat gruesome, but that’s because I was raised to bury our dead and not to play with the bones.
September 30th, 2010 at 9:00 pm
So the argument is if they were bones from dug up from the local christian cemetary they would deteriorate so that means they must be the bones of muslims. Explain again why muslim bones don’t deteriorate?
The practice of removing bodies from christian cemetaries after a period of years and placing them in an ossuary was practiced in many parts Europe for hundreds of years. It is certainly possible that the bodies were in the ground long enough for the soft tissues to decay and then removed before the bones began to break down.
September 30th, 2010 at 9:25 pm
It’s also important to note that this is an ossuary, not a church. Don’t know what that is? Look it up.
September 30th, 2010 at 10:08 pm
I have actually been to this church. Yes, the bones are in the crypt below the sanctuary. Yes, its a pretty strange sight. The displays are designed to illustrate the impermanence of life, and how we should always be prepared to meet our end. Is it “over the top”? Yes - that is what makes it incredible. Regarding the commentator that said bones decay within a few days. I disagee. I myself have unearthed human bones, several hundred years old, as part of an archaeological excavation. I can assure you that archaeologists treat human remains with the highest degree of care and respect.

Hello everyone,
Enclosed please see the response I’ve received from the church manager. It is really confusing since the church claims these are the bones of regular Christians who were buried at the ossuary. I did a little study online about the history of the church etc. but I did not find anywhere claiming that these are actual Muslim bones. However there is a big question of how come these bones which as they claim had been removed from the regular graves are so solid and had not been decomposed.
There must be a deep history research before blaming this on Christians involved in Crusade wars against Muslims.
Thanks,
Dear Sir,
thanks for your email. The European ossuaries are in fact graveyards for bones, which were exhumed e.g. by abolition of the regular cemeteries, therefore all bones are real, even the decoration is made of real bones. It was made in 1870 from bones, which were inside the ossuary already. As far as we are constantly receiving emails whether there are muslim bones in the Ossuary I see as noteworthy to say, that we are there are no muslim bones inside Sedlec Ossuary.
Trust this helps

Daer Muslims, Christians or Others,
I would like to request please stop prafinity atleast taking RELIGION, especially when it comes to history and Crusades. We are not supposed to disscuss what happend.
We need to condemned what happend and what is being exhibiting since many centuries in Church. My opinion is either Christanity or Muslims will never be honoured to display bones or body parts of any HUMAN BEING which actually bring violence and anger in our extremist practioners of religions. If someone really want to prove someone wrong or right so better he come up throuh media with proper evidence and forensic reports to confirm DND.
Please stop for the sake of CREATOR we all worship.

why does faith make people into racists?
March 2nd, 2011 at 6:02 pm
I’m not religious. At the same time I find this kind of disheartening. I would prefer my loved ones to not be used as a decoration. I understand that some of you consider this “beautiful” or some consider it “satanic”. They say that this place is very haunted. While I’m not religious, I am a little bit spiritual. I believe that the dead should be able to be in peace. The dead didn’t have much choice over this. It’s just very impersonal. I couldn’t care less if it was a masterpiece.
March 14th, 2011 at 12:38 pm
This place is beautiful! So much care and consideration has gone into it, people should not see it as ’satanic’, ‘anti-religion’ or whatever else you say it is. It is a work of art to show how fragile life is, and I have to say, when I die, I want my bones here!! This is a fantastic visual representation of what people are capable of, and I feel it is a fantastic scene. People should not be insulted by this! I would be honoured to be placed here, I must say! Beautiful!
April 2nd, 2011 at 5:07 am
I think that the time and effort make this a work of art, especially how seemingly well-crafted all of it is. I do, however, feel that this would be one of the utterly creepiest places to visit. The bones are human. Ethnicity, creed, and sexual orientation need not enter the equation. No matter how you look at it, it’s possibly one of the oddest displays of human remains, and I would be appalled if mine would have ended up in such a display.
April 11th, 2011 at 5:15 pm
Why would you even mention sexual orientation? Where the hell did that come from?

The article I cited got stripped out for some reason. I will try again in this posting. If it gets stripped out again then it’s being filtered.

Hello again,
the bones do not decompose so quickly when burried in the soil, we have remains of australopithecus being old hundreds thousands years old. In Sedlec we are talking abut bones “only” 700 years old. The bones decompose much more quickly being on air. As far as these are from 1500 on air, they are still looking good, thanks also the condition inside the chapel. On the other hand the condition of the bones is not so excellent as you present. If they would be burried in soil, they would look even better.
I am sorry, but we have historical sources to support the bones coming from plague epidemy. Can anyone give us any evidence supporting the theory it is going about muslim bones? I think the condition of the bones is not sufficient prove. Thank you.
July 23rd, 2011 at 9:38 am
First off, I am a Muslim. Second off, I have actually visited this Ossuary.
I ask all of my fellow Muslims: how many of you have actually been there in person? Please visit it yourself, do some on-site research, then get back to us about the facts, as opposed to simply believing online rumors, which may or may not be true.
I ask all of those that are calling Muslims names, do you have any actual personal basis for insulting us all, or is it merely from ignorance? Is it really so unimaginable that it might be true that they (or some of them) are Muslims’ bones? And if someone is able to prove that there are Muslim bones in there, is it such a leap of logic to understand why it might be offensive to some that their ancestors bones’ were not merely moved, desecrated and put on display in a basement of another religion? Would you like your grandparents’ bones to be made into the coat of arms of some rich family for their and tourists’ entertainment?
Personally, plague victims’ bones seem more likely to be handy in Bohemia than that of 40,000 Muslims’, but since I’m no expert, I’m not going to weigh in one way or the other. All I ask is that people have a bit of empathy about the other side’s opinions, and have enough respect to debate the issue with knowledge instead of insults. Thank you.

Please let me know if you’re looking for a article author for your weblog. You have some really great articles and I feel I would be a good asset. If you ever want to take some of the load off, I’d really like to write some material for your blog in exchange for a link back to mine. Please send me an email if interested. Thanks!

I have discovered that clever real estate agents all around you are getting set to FSBO Advertising and marketing. They are knowing that it’s more than merely placing a sign in the front property. It’s really regarding building human relationships with these sellers who at some time will become consumers. So, when you give your time and energy to aiding these retailers go it alone : the “Law associated with Reciprocity” kicks in. Good blog post.
